Lawyers who work for Quebec’s ombudsman are set to go on strike starting Sept. 8. LANEQ, the union representing Quebec government lawyers and notaries, said Tuesday it had given the employer a strike notice. It plans to launch an indefinite strike on Sept. 8 if no agreement is reached by then. There are only six lawyers in the group, all women, LANEQ said. They work in Quebec City and Montreal. LANEQ said the dispute with the Quebec government centres on compensation. The union is seeking pay parity for its members with lawyers working in the public service and prosecutors with the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions. “That is the only sticking point. All non-monetary issues have been resolved,” the union said. If the strike goes ahead, no essential services are expected to be provided, the union said. Quebec’s ombudsman handles complaints involving the health and social services network, as well as complaints concerning Quebec government ministries and agencies, among other matters.
