Price at the pumps: ‘It won’t be long’ before gas prices rise

The increase is modest for now, but prices at the pump are likely to rise further due to the conflict in Iran.

In Montreal, the average price at the pump was 155.3 cents per litre (¢/l) on Monday, 2.3 per cent higher than last week’s average, according to data from the Régie de l’énergie.

The increase is more modest than the rise in oil prices.

The price per barrel was up 6.25 per cent, or US$4.19, to US$71.21 on the New York Stock Exchange in the early afternoon.

It won’t be long before prices at the pump rise further, predicts CAA-Quebec communications advisor Simon Bourassa in an interview.

The rise in oil prices will eventually be passed on to consumers, he warns.

“We’ll have to let the dust settle a bit before we can measure the impact of the conflict,” says Carol Montreuil, vice president for Eastern Canada at the Canadian Fuel Association. However, he points out that the trend is upward.

Disruptions to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz are causing concern. Nearly 20 per cent of the world’s oil supply passes through this strait at the southern end of the Persian Gulf.

Most of this oil supplies Asian markets, but the disruptions are affecting global energy prices, Montreuil points out.
