Most Quebec restaurants approve of dogs on terrasses after first season

Quebec’s first summer allowing dogs on outdoor terrasses has gone smoothly, according to a new survey of restaurant owners.

The Quebec Restaurant Association (ARQ) says 65 per cent of restaurants who responded to their survey allowed dogs on their dining patios this season, and 90 per cent of those described the experience as positive. Nearly three-quarters reported no issues at all.

Among the complaints: some pet owners ignored the rules (12 per cent), a few patrons disliked seeing dogs (10 per cent), and a handful of animals misbehaved (4 per cent).

Of the 35 per cent restaurants that decided not to allow dogs, more than half reported no problems, though some said they faced frustration from customers.

Looking ahead, 60 per cent of restaurateurs say they’ll allow dogs again next year, while 40 per cent plan to keep terrasses pet-free — a slight drop from earlier in the season.

The ARQ stressed that welcoming dogs remains voluntary and depends on the cooperation of both pet owners and customers.
