More rides on Montreal cycling network leading to ‘bike jams’

'Bike jams' are a growing problem on Montreal's bike paths, with more and more residents taking the two-wheel commute.

We’ve heard about traffic jams on our highways and downtown streets, but how about on our bike paths? Many Montreal cyclists have to deal with “bike jams,” too.

Montreal express bike network, known as the REV, has become a victim of its own success, according to Jean-Francois Rheault, president and CEO of Velo-Quebec, which promotes cycling culture in the province.

“Bike paths like the REV St-Denis with over 1.6 million users last year are at capacity. During the rush hour, we see lines of 20 to 30 cyclists, which reduce their comfort and some people say, ‘It’s too busy, so i don’t want to ride there,’” he said.

So many riders mean the morning commute can get clogged. Rheault said the solution is more bike paths -- a positive for everyone on the roads. “People can choose cycling because it’s safe. And when someone chooses the bicycle, it’s good for everyone. It reduces congestion,” he said.

Rheault also argues that safety is another reason to add more bike paths because cars and bikes sharing lanes can lead to accidents.

The STM strike is also leading many more cyclists to use the network.

“We saw an increase up to almost 100,000 Bixi trips in one day. So we see with these numbers cycling is an important part of the mobility solutions in Montreal.” said Rheault. “People need more options to get around. They don’t need [fewer] options to get around.”
