A video has gone viral online showing a man hurling vile and misogynistic insults at a Montreal police officer. There are now calls for consequences for this kind of verbal abuse against police. The video, filmed and posted by the driver of the vehicle, shows a young female police officer carrying out a traffic stop for an illegal tinted window. The driver can be heard aggressively telling her to shut up, even saying he’s going to buy her and own her as a slave. “It’s a repulsive video,” said Montreal police Chief Fady Dagher at a news conference on Tuesday, adding that it’s a clear example of the masculinist movement that is growing online. He also commended the young officer for staying calm during the interaction. “She’s quite the ambassador,” Dagher added. Yves Francoeur, president of the Montreal police brotherhood, also commented on the incident. “She did exactly what she was trained for. She was very professional, but unfortunately, she didn’t have the appropriate regulations to do something,” Francoeur said. He said in other Quebec cities, insulting an officer is a ticket-able offence but that’s not the case in Montreal. Both he and Dagher want that changed. In a statement, Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada wrote: “The language and behaviour shown in the video are unacceptable. It is sexist and shows a complete lack of respect for our police officers, who do a difficult job.” Her office says the city is ready to discuss the possibility of adding a bylaw, but added that the mayor believes body cameras are the most effective tool to help keep both officers and citizens safe. The video was originally taken in June 2025 but was only posted on TikTok over the weekend. It has since been viewed more than two million times across the different social media platforms. Francoeur says the police brotherhood is supporting the officer but is calling on men especially to stand up to this type of abuse. “I’m the father of two daughters who were about the same age as the officer. So it’s very tough. And I think even as men, we can’t tolerate insults like that,” he said. He said the brotherhood is exploring legal options and could eventually sue the man in the video.
