The Iranian Women’s Association of Montreal hosted a small yet significant gathering on Tuesday to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. At Place des Montrealaises, red shoes—the colour of blood—stood as poignant symbols. Each pair represented victims of gender-based violence. “Every 10 minutes in the world, one woman is killed,” said Nima Machouf, a co-organizer of the event. She emphasized that the shoes symbolize lives lost and are part of a global network advocating for increased support for victims and their families. “In 25 different cities around the world, Iranian Women’s Associations organize this exposition of 25 red shoes,” she said. Atena Barforoushi, an Iranian-Canadian master’s student, reflected on inequality. “We are witnessing the human and especially women’s rights violations all around the world, and specifically in marginalized countries,” she said. The organizers feminicide is a global issue that is often under-reported. “The violence against women is not only in other countries; it’s even here. In Canada last year, we had 185 femicides. It’s unacceptable,” she said. Their message calls for all women to advocate for equal rights and safety. “We are all connected in this world,” said Barforoushi. ”Any step toward women’s rights definitely affects and makes a difference for all women around the world. I truly appreciate any community, especially privileged ones, that raises their voice and breaks the silence.”
