‘Deeply concerning’: French translation of Hitler’s ‘Mein Kampf’ sells for $14,000 at Montreal auction

A copy of Mein Kampf is up for auction, drawing objections from the Jewish community in Montreal.

A French translation of Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” has been sold on a Montreal auction site for thousands of dollars.

Earlier this week, representatives of the Montreal Holocaust Museum denounced the planned auction of the book, saying no one should profit from the sale of Nazi propaganda.

Written in 1925, “Mein Kampf” was Hitler’s Nazi Party manifesto, which served as the basis for the Nazi regime’s racist policies.

Patrick Bleziel, owner of auction house Maison des Encans de Montreal, had told CTV News that he expected the book to sell for around $100, but on Friday he confirmed that someone bought it for $14,000, much to his surprise.

In an interview this week, he said he didn’t see anything controversial about selling the book written by a man responsible for the killing of six million Jews across Europe during the Second World War.

The Montreal Holocaust Museum didn’t see it that way.

“We’re deeply concerned about who is profiting from this sale. Who is buying it? What is happening with this object? The text is really harmful and dangerous not just for Jews but for any minority that Hitler and the Nazis sought to target,” said Sarah Fogg, the museum’s director of communications.

“So it’s deeply concerning what’s happening with this book and why someone might be interested in purchasing it for over $13,000.”

The museum hopes the funds will be sent to an organization that can offer more Holocaust education or Holocaust survivor support.
