There is special opportunity for Canadian gardeners who have been growing herbaceous perennials for several years to 'dig and divide' this time of year. You can spread the good looks of your perennials around your yard and garden or give them away. It is up to you.

Of the many perennials that are suitable for dividing this time of year hosta, monarda and day lilies would head the list. Most any perennial that has not grown out of the soil by more that a few centimeters is suitable for division this time of year with the notable exceptions of German Iris [which should be divided in mid August] and peonies [which should be divided in mid September].

When planting your new divisions it is important to prepare the soil well with generous quantities of compost and sand [for porosity], firm the soil around the root of the newly planted divisions and water well. If it does not rain over the next while be sure to add water every week until the plant is well established.

Dividing perennials is fun and easy. Give it a try!
