Seems the first thing that Canadians want to do this time of year is to hose down the driveway: that feels like a trip to Florida! And 2nd on the list is to get out on the lawn for a spring 'spruce up'.

First of all, rake your lawn with a fan rake. Do not put too much into this as your back is more valuable than a little thatch. You are only getting the grass blades to stand up on end and to remove the loose winter debris.

Secondly, fill in bald patches with an inch or two of lawn soil and spread quality grass seed over the area by hand. Rake it smooth and step on it to get it in firm contact with the soil. Water well.

Finally, fertilize with a good quality fertilizer that contains slow release nitrogen. This will continue to work as rain falls and temperatures rise for up to 10 weeks."
