Where should you put the snow off your driveway?

OPP are reminding home owners that it’s illegal to put snow or ice from your property onto the roadway.

An offence under the Highway Traffic Act, “no person shall deposit snow or ice on a roadway without permission in writing to do so from the ministry or the road authority responsible for the maintenance of the road”

Police say it creates a hazard because it could freeze into patches posing a risk to drivers, forces public works crews to re-clear areas, delaying the overall process and potentially leading to higher costs, and large piles of snow on the side of the road can obstruct the line of sight for both drivers and pedestrians.

Instead of putting it on the road, police ask residents to shovel or plow the snow onto your own lawn or driveway area, being mindful of neighbours

It’s also advised to keep fire hydrants clear by making sure snow is not piled around hydrants, so emergency services can access them quickly if necessary.

When it comes to overnight parking, it’s advised to check your local bylaws regarding overnight parking.
