Unemployment rises in London, Ont.

The latest jobs numbers have shown a hit to manufacturing as U.S. tariffs begin to take their toll on the Canadian labour market.

The April jobs report showed overall that the economy added a small number of positions.

But the unemployment rate went up to 6.9 per cent.

Here in London, the manufacturing sector pinch is being felt as well.

Our unemployment rate rose last month.

According to Statistics Canada, April’s jobless figure rose to 6.4 per cent from 5.9 per cent in March.

Roughly 1,800 jobs were lost locally.

Nationally, the number went up to 6.9 per cent, but the economy added 7,400 jobs.

Ontario’s unemployment rate also went up by point 3 per cent to 7.8 per cent.
