Leaders on the Saugeen Ojibway Nation say they want all provincial and federally owned land on the Bruce Peninsula returned. A 2021 court decision found the federal government breached an 1836 treaty to protect the Bruce Peninsula for use by Saugeen Ojibway Nation members. Saugeen leaders wanted $80-billion in compensation and all relevant crown lands returned, including Bruce Peninsula National Park. Federal government officials have pushed back, saying the land in question should not be considered compensation in this case. A hearing is now scheduled for October to decide if the land can be included as compensation for breaching the 1836 treaty.
