The province’s Special Investigation’s Unit (SIU) has ended their investigation into a man’s rib fractures in Huron OPP custody. Direction Joseph Martino found “no reasonable grounds” to believe the officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the injury suffered by a 69-year-old man. On March 4, the man was arrested in relation to an incident at City Hall in Wingham that had occurred in February. According to the SIU, the man was being returned to a cell at the Clinton OPP detachment, and struggled with officers. He was forced to the floor and the arresting officer put his right knee on the left side of the man’s back. Paramedics took him to hospital where he was treated. While he accepted that the man’s ribs were fractured, by the officer, Martino says there was no indication in the video footage that the officer used significant force.
