‘Another wave of heavy rain’: Special weather statement issued for London region

Thunderstorms will roll into the region Tuesday into Wednesday as the region finds itself under a blanket of warm air. CTV's Lauren Stallone explains.

A special weather statement has been issued for the London region in advance of an approaching low-pressure system.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the London region and surrounding areas as heavy rain is expected to fall Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

“Another wave of heavy rain is expected to push into southern Ontario tonight,” Environment Canada said. “This next round of rain is associated with a compact low-pressure system pushing into southwestern Ontario.”

Rainfall amounts of between 30 to 50 millimetres are expected, with locally higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Environment Canada says exact rainfall totals remain unclear as a slight deviation in the track of the low pressure system will significantly impact where the heaviest rain develops.

The weather authority adds that water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas, and drivers are advised to not drive through flooded roadways.

Summerlike temperatures

According to CTV News London’s Lauren Stallone, a stationary boundary sitting over the region brought in warmer temperatures and a high of 23 C on Tuesday, which felt like 28 with the humidity.

North of that boundary were colder temperatures, whereas south of the boundary was warmer air. For example, Windsor cracked a high of 24 C on Tuesday, making it the warmest place in Canada for the second day in a row.

Temperatures won’t fluctuate too dramatically, with Tuesday’s overnight low dipping down to 13 C, and reaching a high of 18 C on Wednesday.

Stallone says the showers will wrap up Wednesday morning, with a 60 per cent chance of showers and a risk of thunderstorms for the rest of the day.

Double digit temperatures and rainfall dominate the forecast going into the weekend, with daytime highs of between 16 C to 18 C expected between Thursday and Saturday, but Stallone says temperatures drop off Saturday night.

“Temperatures will drop down Saturday overnight,” she said. “That’s a result of a low-pressure system we’re seeing come through.”

For the latter half of the weekend into early next week temperatures plunge into single digits, even below freezing overnight, with a mix of clouds, sunshine, rain and flurries possible.
