Recommendations target in-custody care following Drew Pearson inquest

A jury in the Drew Pearson death inquest has returned with 15 recommendations to prevent future in-custody deaths.

A jury at the Drew Pearson inquest has issued 15 recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths in custody.

Pearson died of sepsis in December 2018 after he was charged in connection with a boarding house arson. He had asked to be taken to hospital but was denied.

Among the recommendations is a call to prioritize permanently embedding medical staff at the police detention centre.

Jurors also recommend police immediately notify a supervisor when a person in custody requests to go to hospital.
