Open Streets takes over Windsor roadways

Pedestrians hit the streets this weekend, enjoying the Open Streets event, which stretched from Ford City to Sandwich Town.

Many of Windsor’s busiest roads shut down to cars on Sunday to pave the way for Open Streets 2025.

Along 8 kilometres of roads, businesses moved their selections outside, and residents took the opportunity to walk and bike vehicle-free streets.

As long as the city has held Open Streets, Lana Costea said her family has been taking the opportunity to travel the city by bike.

“The ability to just drive through the middle of the streets that we could never do with our bicycles and listen to all the great music that comes out of Windsor,” Costea said, while stopped in Ford City.

Spanning all the way to Sandwich Town, Open Streets features vendor markets, music and activities.

Held annually, this year’s edition featured eight hubs celebrating different neighbourhoods.

For Costea, a South Windsor resident, there’s a need for more opportunities to slow down and see places she otherwise wouldn’t have stopped to visit.

“It wouldn’t be fun and we wouldn’t have the opportunity to find little vintage stores and little, you know, places that we don’t see when we’re driving to somewhere,” Costea said.

This year, the city returned to a West and Central route after hosting an East End edition in 2024.
