The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) has issued a flood watch for municipalities in the Maitland and Nine Mile River watersheds. Based off forecasted weather and temperatures expected to reach a high of 5 C Friday, and reaching around 16 C Saturday, snow will melt. There’s also a possibility of 10 to 33 millimetres of rainfall overnight and thunderstorms. “Even without additional rainfall, river levels could reach those experienced during the December 2008 event,” the MVCA said in an advisory. “Water levels are expected to rise rapidly throughout Saturday, likely exceeding bank full and resulting in riverine flooding beyond typical low-lying areas.” Peak flows are expected Sunday morning to Monday night. The high-water levels could last into Wednesday for some areas. Municipalities are encouraged to check drainage systems, monitor low-lying and flood prone areas, and prepare for road closures. This flood watch is in effect until Wednesday at 1 p.m.
