Amidst a string of recent confirmed measles exposures in southwestern Ontario, the Middlesex London Health Unit (MLHU) has joined the ranks of other local health authorities in warning the public of a confirmed measles exposure in the community. According to the MLHU, shoppers at Value Village, 4465 Wellington Road South may have been exposed to a case of measles on March 1, from 10:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. “There are many active cases of measles across Southwestern Ontario, particularly in our neighbouring jurisdictions. Exposures to measles in the Middlesex-London region are expected. Those who are immunocompromised or unvaccinated are most at risk for serious illness,” said Dr. Janice Mok, Resident Physician for MLHU. “Vaccination is the most important protection and is safe and widely available.” Generally, those born before 1970 are considered immune to measles. Those born after 1970 should make sure that their immunization records reflect that their protection is up to date. If exposed, individuals that are immunocompromised, or pregnant and unvaccinated for measles should call MLHU to discuss post-exposure treatment. Anyone that may have been exposed should monitor for symptoms for 21 days. Symptoms include fever, runny nose, cough, red and irritated eyes, small white, grey or blue spots in the mouth, and a red blotchy rash. If you suspect that you may have measles, it is asked that you self isolate in your home to avoid spreading it to others. If you require medical attention, make your healthcare provider aware that you may have measles prior to visiting so that they can have appropriate precautions in place.
