Londoners celebrate Family Day with loved ones

It’s Family Day! While adults may see the holiday as a break, kids have their own ideas about what family really means. CTV’s Lauren Stallone explains.

From hitting the slopes at Boler Mountain to taking a stroll through Springbank Park, families gathered across London Monday to celebrate Family Day and spend time together.

“We were planning to have a walk here so we did a 5k and after that we will go have lunch and coffee,” said one Londoner.

Many adults use Family Day to reflect on all they have to be grateful for.

“It’s important to take this break,” said one man. “Take this pause and enjoy the fact that we have a family and everyone is healthy, so it means a lot.”

However, children see the meaning of family as much simpler.

“Love, caring, and kindness,” said one child.

As a provincial statutory holiday, some places like movie theatres and community centres were open – but many families chose to spend the day outdoors.

“We’re going for a walk to get some fresh air,” said one child.

Beyond the fun activities and extra day off from school, one child said family is really about looking out for one another, “As a big brother I always want to protect my sisters from people and other things because if I hadn’t, they could have gotten in a lot of trouble.”
