London mayoral candidate Josh Morgan is promising to freeze municipal recreation fees for at least two years if elected, saying the move would help keep city programs affordable for families. Morgan announced the proposal Friday at the StarTech.com Community Centre. Under the plan, he said fees for city-operated recreation programs and facilities, including swimming lessons, public skating, fitness classes, drop-in programs and community centre activities, would remain at current rates for a minimum of two years. Morgan said the fee freeze is intended to provide greater cost certainty for residents facing household budget pressures while encouraging participation in recreation programs. The proposal would also expand the city’s Play Your Way Fund, which provides financial assistance to eligible low-income residents for recreation programs and activities. Morgan said the city would review eligibility requirements and the application process, with the goal of making the program easier to access and ensuring sufficient funding. In addition, he said the plan calls for an increase in free community programming, including activities such as public skates and swims. Morgan said the proposal builds on previous investments in parks, trails, playgrounds and other public spaces, and aims to keep recreation opportunities accessible to residents.
