Kristen and Mike Norris, founders of Designated Drinks, are happily married, but it wasn’t always this way. “About 8 years ago our life fell apart,” said Kristen. The leading factor, alcohol. “Mike was a big drinker,” said Kristen. “It got to the point where I left.” Having two young daughters to care for at the time, Mike said he knew he needed to make a change. “I came to this crossroads where I was like oh man my family, and this alcohol thing,” said Mike. “I have a chance to move forward and get the help I need.” After months of dedication, Mike and Kristen found their way back to each other. “We rebuilt our family,” said Kristen. Now, the Norris’ are using their story to help others. “I promised myself if we survived and got out of this, we would share our story and help others so they don’t feel alone, like I did,” said Kristen. “The journey has taken us to a business called ‘Designated Drinks’.” Featuring a variety of non-alcoholic beers, cocktails, and wines, the company is aimed at providing the social perks that come with drinking, without the hangover. “I missed having a cool beer after work and that Saturday night ritual,” said Mike. “Just having a cool beer with friends.” Mike and Kristen said they hope their story encourages others to reach out for help. “That’s part of the relatable side of our story and how alcohol can become a problem behind closed doors,” said Kristen. “There’s not a lot of places you can talk about it because it is so shameful.” The Norris’ said they plan to open a zero-proof brewery in the future.
