Expect delays as next phase of Wellington Gateway construction to begin Monday

Drivers might want to find an alternate route as phase two of the Wellington Gateway project is set to begin this Monday.

According to a news release, beginning Monday (weather permitting) early work will begin on Phase 2 of the Wellington Gateway project.

The final part of the project will be built in two parts, beginning with Phase 2A. The first of which covers Wellington Road from Wilkins Street to Base Line Road East.

To prepare for construction, the city says lane restrictions will be in place at the Commissioners and Wellington intersection and the Waterman and Wellington intersection to allow for the installation of temporary traffic signals.

Full construction of Phase 2A is scheduled to begin in early April 2026.

The city says drivers should follow posted signs and use detour routes to get around the construction.

In addition people traveling through the area are advised to drive with caution, allow extra time, and plan ahead using a navigation app such as Waze or Google Maps. For detours and the latest service updates, you can visit the London Transit Commission’s (LTC) website or the LTC on social media.

The Wellington Gateway project is one of three rapid transit projects in London. The city says it is designed to increase the frequency and reliability of transit along one of London’s busiest corridors by providing dedicated lanes for rapid transit buses.

The project will revitalize approximately six kilometres of road between the downtown core and Highway 401.

Work includes widening Wellington Road and Wellington Street to add transit-only lanes, improving active transportation connections, enhancing streetscape elements, and upgrading underground infrastructure and servicing utilities.
