REGINA - Liberal MP Ralph Goodale wants an independent body to track the impact of the Canadian Wheat Board's loss of its marketing monopoly.

Ottawa passed legislation in December that will allow western wheat and barley growers to sell their grain on the open market instead of having to go through the board.

Goodale says it's not clear what the consequences will be on farmers and their bottom line.

He says there's no way to measure the impact unless an impartial institution such as the University of Saskatchewan tracks the outcome.

Goodale says one option is to follow what happens for the next five years when most of the changes take place.

The new law becomes effective Aug. 1 in time for the next crop year.
