A Guelph man is facing several charges after police say he broke into a fire station and damaged a fire truck while firefighters were inside sleeping. Guelph Police said a man pried open a window and cut a screen to gain access to the fire station on Speedvale Avenue East early Sunday morning. Police said the man entered a fire truck and damaged it by ripping out the radio microphone and damaging a lever. A captain was awakened by noise and the man fled the station, according to police. Officers later found him hiding in the area after conducting a canine track. Police said officers searching the man recovered a Guelph Fire Department hat and small quantities of suspected methamphetamine and cocaine. “Investigation revealed the man was also wanted after a stolen SUV was crashed and abandoned in the west end last month,” police said in a news release. A 40-year-old Guelph man is charged with break and enter, mischief over $5,000, possessing stolen property, disguise with intent, two counts of possessing controlled substances, dangerous driving, failing to remain and breaching a probation order. The fire truck was taken out of service until repairs could be completed.
