80-year-old woman dies following assault in downtown Guelph

Guelph Police say an 80-year-old woman, who was attacked Sunday morning, has now died from her injuries.

The victim was found unconscious on the sidewalk, near Wyndham Street North and Macdonell Street, around 9:40 a.m.

She was initially transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police did not share details of the attack.

A 34-year-old man from Guelph arrested later that same day and charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.

At the time, investigators believed the two had met previously but were not close acquaintances.

Police said they will not be commenting at this time about any additional or upgraded charges.
