Widow of Elora man killed by impaired driver reacts to suspect’s sentencing

The driver responsible for a fatal 2023 crash on Highway 6, near Guelph, has learned his fate. CTV’s Karis Mapp has reaction from David Generaux’s widow.

Sabrina Genereaux says the last year and a half has been an emotional roller coaster for her and her family.

Her husband David was killed in a crash on Highway 6, between Fergus and Guelph in December 2023.

On Monday, Michael Shular was sentenced to seven years behind bars. Court documents show that after serving his time, Shular will face a driving suspension for an additional 12 years.

“Even if he got life, it wouldn’t have been enough for what he took from my family,” said Sabrina.

Shular pleaded guilty in April to impaired driving causing death. Blood tests showed at the time of the crash that he was under the influence of fentanyl and methamphetamines.

“He’s where he needs to be because it wasn’t fair that he was just on house arrest for the last year and a half,” Sabrina said.

She and eight of David’s friends read victim impact statements during court.

“I felt like Dave needed to be heard,” she explained. “He didn’t have that option to do it, so who better to do it than me?”

David was 40 years old at the time and left behind his son, who was only two months old when he died.

“I haven’t really got to enjoy being a new mom,” she tearfully explained.

Though she says it was an isolating experience at times, Sabrina said her friends and community helped her get through this.

“They brought food and diapers and clothes and stuff for the baby,” she said. “I think I was overwhelmed at the time but it was amazing how everybody came together to help me.”

Part of her healing journey has included attending monthly Mothers Against Drunk Driving (Madd) meetings.

“I went to the conference that they had in Toronto this year. In September, they’re having a memorial so we’re putting Dave’s name on a plaque up there.”

Though their son may not remember his father, Sabrina says David’s legacy will live on forever.

“He was funny, he liked to play practical jokes and I really hope that our son picks it up and does that kind of stuff. He was just all around a good guy.”
