The Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo & Stratford Perth is trying to raise thousands of dollars to fund potentially lifesaving treatments for two dogs. One of them, a 2-year-old called Django, recently tested positive for heartworm disease during his intake exam at the Humane Society’s Stratford location. Meanwhile, in Kitchener, 4-year-old Oscar also tested positive for the same disease. “Heartworm treatment is complex, lengthy, and unfortunately very expensive,” the organization said in a news release on Wednesday. “Together, Django and Oscar’s estimated medical costs are $10,000.” Heartworm disease is considered a serious illness that can sometimes be fatal. It is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito, which can introduce microscopic larvae into a dog’s bloodstream. Without treatment, the larvae grows into adult worms that live in the heart and major blood vessels of animals, causing irreversible organ damage. Django and Oscar have a long road ahead them with treatments scheduled over the next couple of months. If everything goes to plan, they will be at the Humane Society for at least two months before they are eligible for adoption. “This holiday season, we’re asking our community to help give Django and Oscar the gift of health,” said Victoria Baby, CEO of HSKWSP. “Your donation will support their treatment and help ensure they each have the chance to enjoy many more holidays in loving homes.”
