The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate after a man died during an interaction with Guelph Police. It happened Sunday, around 9 a.m., at an apartment building near London Street West and Bagot Street. The SIU said police received multiple calls about a man’s behaviour and, when they arrived at the apartment, they were forced to break down the door. “Upon entering the unit, an interaction ensued between officers and the man,” the SIU’s preliminary report noted. “The man retreated from the police, and a short time later [he] fell to the ground below.” The man was pronounced dead in hospital. Guelph Police have only identified him as a 58-year-old. They shared no further details as the SIU is now investigating the incident.
