A residential project, at the former Krug furniture factory site in Stratford, will be moving forward now that the developer has reached a resolution with the Canadian National (CN) Railway. According to the project coordinator with BMI Group, CN’s appeal with the Ontario Land Tribunal was settled through a negotiated settlement, allowing the Builders Block development to proceed as planned. The agreement focused on building and site changes intended to reduce noise from the nearby rail corridor. The redevelopment of the 7.2-acre property will seethe construction of several buildings, including a 10-storey tower. The original proposal called for an 11-storey building with a total of 382 units, which didn’t sit well with some critics of the project. Stratfordcouncil approved the project in October 2024. Following a public consultation process, the developer came back with a plan to reduce the total units to 361. BMI Group also promised 10 per cent of the units would be affordable, which some councillors cited as a major factor in its favour. Cleanup work at the former industrial site began shortly after the project was approved.
