A couple from Guelph, Ont. has lost $140,000 after investing in fake Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs). Guelph Police said the couple was looking for new investments online when they found a website for what they thought was a real bank. The pair said they spoke with two “representatives of the institute,” who recommended investing in “high-yielding GICs.” However, when they tried withdrawing the money from their accounts, they were told there was no record and the people they had spoken with didn’t working for the bank. Police are reminding people to be careful when seeking out financial services and advice online.
