The Region of Waterloo is moving ahead with plans to build a five-storey co-op at 30 Lauris Ave. in Cambridge. They said the 101 new rental units would be offered at below market rates. “The project will create one of Waterloo Region’s first new co-operative housing communities in more than 30 years, marking an important milestone in expanding local housing options and supporting a broader range of housing types for residents,” a media release said. The developer is the Central Ontario Co-operative Housing Federation (COCHF), who will also be responsible for operations at 30 Lauris Ave. Construction is expected to start this fall. “Creating more affordable homes for residents living on a range of incomes is a community effort, and it takes creativity,” said regional chair Karen Redman. “This project and the region’s partnership with Central Ontario Co-operative Housing Federation are great examples of how we can keep working together to add more below-market homes to support individuals and families to build stability and strengthen communities now and in the future.” Residents who want to learn more about the project and how co-operative housing works can stop by St. Anne Catholic Elementary School on Aug. 20. Representatives will be on hand to answer any questions between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. More information is also available at EngageWR.ca/Lauris.
