Brant-Brantford Crime Stoppers is one of the latest chapters to announce it is putting a pause on taking tips following a hack that may have put the anonymity of their tipsters in jeopardy. The Brantford Police Service announced Monday it has temporarily suspended the service while seeking additional information about a reported cybersecurity breach. “The Brantford Police Service is committed to community safety and values the role that confidential tips play in helping investigators gather information and advanced investigations,” police said in a statement. “The decision to temporarily suspend the use of the program reflects the importance of ensuring appropriate safeguards are in place to protect the confidentiality of information and the anonymity of individuals who come forward.” Navigate360, the company behind the P3 software used by Crime Stoppers to collect tips since 2018, was targeted by hackers in March. Crime Stoppers has said they don’t know the full extent of the breach, but names may have been compromised. Guelph Wellington and Waterloo Region have also stopped taking tips.
