Over a five-day period, between June 28 to July 2, there were 44 suspected overdoses and one suspected drug-related death reported across Waterloo Region. That data was released Friday in a community alert from Region of Waterloo Public Health. They said the heat wave may have played a part, as there is an increased the risk of death or drug poisoning during hot weather. Another factor is the inconsistency and toxicity in the drug supply. “Unexpected drugs may be mixed in to any type of street drug without people knowing,” public health warned in the alert. They also said Sanguen’s Drug Checking Program tested samples and found that fentanyl was stronger than expected, along with higher amount of non-opioids and opioids. The public health unit urged residents to call 911 if someone has passed out or won’t wake up, or experiences severe nausea, vomiting, fast breathing and a fast heartbeat.
