MEXICO CITY -- A health official says Mexico has its first confirmed case of a person infected with a new mosquito-borne virus that has spread quickly in the Caribbean.
Assistant Health Secretary Pablo Kuri said Thursday that a woman contracted the chikungunya virus when she travelled to Antigua and Barbuda for a sports competition at the end of May.
Kuri says the woman from the western state of Jalisco was treated for the virus and is doing well.
Chikungunya has long been present in Africa and Asia and was first detected in the Caribbean in December.
Its symptoms have been described as a combination of a terrible flu and a sudden case of arthritis, with searing headaches, a high fever and intense muscle and joint pain.
