‘Do not consume’: Herbal tea recalled due to salmonella risk

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a recall of Celebration Herbals Senna Leaf Herbal Tea, citing potential contamination with salmonella.

The alert was posted on Wednesday and triggered by the company.

The affected product is sold in boxes of 24 tea bags (42 grams) with a best by date of Oct. 29, 2028. The UPC code is 6 28240 20182 9, with a lot number 251004.

The product was distributed in B.C., New Brunswick and Ontario, as well as sold online.

Consumers and retailers are urged not to “consume, serve, sell or distribute” the recalled tea. Instead, the CFIA recommends disposing of recalled packages or returning them to the point of purchase.

“Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick,” the recall said.

CFIA said there have been no reports of illnesses linked to the tea.

Symptoms of salmonella include fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps or diarrhea. Long-term complications from Salmonella infection can include severe conditions like arthritis.

CFIA warns that people who consumed the tea are advised to contact a health-care provider.
