WINNIPEG - The American Hockey League says its loss in Winnipeg is the NHL's gain.

The future of the AHL's Manitoba Moose is uncertain after Winnipeg-based True North Sports and Entertainment purchased the Atlanta Thrashers.

The as-yet unnamed NHL franchise will replace the Moose at the MTS Centre.

True North owns the Moose franchise, which is part of the Vancouver Canucks farm system, and said it plans to continue owning the team but doesn't yet know where the Moose will be relocated.

AHL president and chief executive officer David Andrews said in a statement the franchise's future "will be determined in the weeks ahead."
