After five years of marriage, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are getting a divorce, People is reporting.

People says Holmes's attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, informed them Friday that the couple has decided to go their separate ways.

"This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," Wolfe said in an article that was posted on the People.com website at exactly 1 p.m. ET.

"Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

Cruise's representative, Amanda Lundberg, later told The Associated Press: "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children... Please allow them their privacy to work this out."

The 49-year-old Cruise, who currently stars in “Rock of Ages,” wed Holmes, 33, in a Scientology ceremony in November 2006.

The wedding came after a whirlwind, media-intense courtship that was most famously marked by Cruise’s “couch-jumping” incident on the Oprah Winfrey Show, in which Cruise effusively proclaimed his love for Holmes.

Before the wedding, Holmes gave birth to their daughter Suri, 6.

This was Holmes's first marriage and the third for Cruise, who previously was married to the actresses Nicole Kidman -- with whom he has two teenage children -- and Mimi Rogers.
