While they're meant to recognize the very best of film, the Academy Awards winners don't always line up with popular tastes when it comes to the Best Picture of the Year.
It's extremely rare for the Best Picture of the Year to also rake in the most money at the box office, and in many cases, the Academy's favourite film simply doesn't stand the test of time. Several films have garnered multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture, only to fade into obscurity a few years later, while other films not nominated for an award have gone on to become timeless classics.
Here's a look back at the last 10 years of Academy Award winners, along with the box office winners and the consensus top-rated film according to the website Rotten Tomatoes. The Rotten Tomatoes scores are collated from critics' review since the film's release, so they more accurately reflect today's view of the film.
