Try out your DJ skills with a new Google Doodle marking the 44th anniversary of hip-hop.

Forty-four years ago this Friday, August 11, Google tells us, a New York DJ named Kool Herc threw a party in the Bronx where he innovated the use of two turntables to extend instrumental breaks -- leading the way to the style known as breakdancing, and essentially marking the birth of hip-hop.

Since then hip-hop culture has come to extend far outside of music into art, fashion and beyond.

To celebrate the anniversary, Google has created a highly interactive Doodle consisting of two turntables and "a crate full of hot records."

A tutorial shows you how to get started, explaining how to use the crossfader and how to choose a track from a selection dating back to the early days of hip-hop.
