The Tenors will get their shot at redemption singing the Canadian anthem at the Grey Cup on Sunday, only five months after Remigio Pereira went rogue with a controversial O Canada improvisation.

The now trio of singers said they’re moving on and are extremely honoured and excited to be able to perform the anthem at the Grey Cup for a second time. They previously performed the anthem four years ago during the 100th anniversary of the Canadian football final.

This will be their first time performing the anthem publicly, as a trio, and the first since Pereira acted as a so-called “lone wolf” at the MLB all-star game in July.

Their anthem performance saw Pereira change the verse, “With glowing hearts we see thee rise, the True North strong and free!” with “We’re all brothers and sisters – all lives matter to the brave,” in response to the racially charged violence in the United States. He also held up a sign that read “All Lives Matter” and “United We Stand.” The Tenors released a statement following the game saying Pereira changed the lyrics “to serve his own political views.”

“It was definitely a shock for us three and a tough moment,” Victor Micallef told CTV’s Your Morning. “It’s been a tough couple of months to get through but we’re looking positively into the future.

Within minutes, the anthem, which aired on Canadian television, was the topic of conversation across social media.

The Tenors recently sang at a tribute for Smokey Robinson – and broke out the dance moves, according to Clifton Murray – as well as a charity concert in Las Vegas hosted by Elton John. They also recently played with David Foster, who Micallef says gave the trio a ‘thumbs up’ on their performance.

“My father always said that it’s not what happens to you that defines your character, it’s how you deal with it,” said Murray. “We sort of looked at ourselves and asked, “Who are we as human beings and what do we believe in?”

According to Murray, the group saw the challenge of changing from a quartet to a trio as a way to try new things. He also said that the force of change has helped them get outside their comfort zone and start recording new music.

The Tenors will be joined at BMO Field in Toronto by Alessia Cara for the kickoff show and OneRepublic for the halftime show with the Calgary Stampeders taking on the Ottawa RedBlacks.
