McDavid scores his first Olympic goal

Connor McDavid has scored his first goal at an Olympics.

The Edmonton Oilers captain scored for Canada on the power play 5:45 into the first period of the men’s game against Switzerland on Friday.

The 29-year-old superstar collected a cross-ice pass from Nathan MacKinnon and wristed it past Swiss netminder Akira Schmid to open the scoring.

Canada’s round-robin game with Switzerland is their second at the Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina. McDavid recorded three assists in Canada’s opening match on Thursday, a 5-0 win over Czechia.

The Games in Italy are McDavid’s first. The National Hockey League did not send players to the Winter Olympics in the previous two Games, 2022 and 2018. McDavid joined the NHL in 2015, one year after the NHL last sent players to the Olympics.
