Woman charged with impaired driving after crash during unrelated police chase

A Red Deer woman is accused of impaired driving and causing a multi-vehicle crash after police said she didn’t stop while they were arresting a different driver earlier this month.

Mounties were in a high-speed chase of a repeat offender wanted on multiple outstanding warrants in Red Deer County on April 2. The 51-year-old man was stopped after police used a tire deflation device and police dogs.

He now faces charges including flight from a peace officer, possession of a controlled substance, driving a motor vehicle without insurance and operating a conveyance dangerous to the public. He remains in custody.

Police say they were still on scene of the initial chase when another SUV driver missed police lights and tow trucks on the road and drove directly into the back of a stopped pick-up truck, causing a multi-vehicle collision. No injuries were reported.

A 46-year-old woman now faces impaired driving charges and was given a 90-day driving suspension under the Traffic Safety Act.

“Red Deer RCMP are reminding the public to be cognizant and obey the rules of the road; slow down, move over, or stop for all emergency vehicles,” read a Wednesday news release.
