Could Alberta be the next to join a league of jurisdictions exploring a social media ban for youth? It’s not likely, according to the justice minister’s press secretary. “Alberta’s government is aware that there are jurisdictions implementing or considering limiting or banning social media for children,” Heather Jenkins said in a statement to CTV News Edmonton. “We are watching these developments, and no restrictions are being considered at this time.” Australia inspired a global discussion by becoming the first country to ban social media use by kids younger than 16. Some European countries are debating following suit. Canada’s Liberals are scheduled to discuss social media age restrictions, artificial intelligence chatbots, and digital safety at the party’s national convention in Montreal later this month. A new poll found the majority of Canadians would support a ban like Australia’s. Saskatchewan’s premier says the province will be trying to gauge residents’ support, as well, but has no formal plans or proposed policy changes.
