Edmonton’s Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation has received $100,000 to put toward pediatric oncology research. “(This is) such an important area of research … because kids struggling with cancer is different than adults. They’re not just little adults; there is special care when it comes to pediatric oncology,” said Sue McCoy, the foundation’s vice president of philanthropy, after a ceremony Tuesday morning. The Stollery is the second largest children’s hospital in Canada and the most specialized children’s hospital in western Canada. McCoy said the grant will enable the hospital to keep furthering its research. “With the research we are doing, we’ve got specialists from around the world that are coming and contributing to the body of knowledge that we have at the Stollery.” The money was raised by the Hyundai Hope on Wheels program, through which a portion of all new Hyundai sales is put toward pediatric cancer research. According to Kirk Merrett, Hyundai’s director of customer experience and dealer performance, the manufacturer will donate $4.1 million to 16 hospitals across the country this year. “It’s important for Hyundai Canada because these are journeys that our customers are going through with their children.” The program was created in 1998 in the United States and 2025 in Canada.
