Shopping, shows and sunshine: Here’s what’s happening in and around Edmonton this weekend

The forecast is looking nice and warm for the next few days, with highs in the mid-20s on Saturday.

Here’s what’s happening in and around Edmonton:

A mass of markets

Spring and summer bring with them plenty of indoor and outdoor markets and this weekend is no exception.

The Cabinet of Curiosities Night Market will feature 85 local vendors, artists and food trucks at the Alberta Aviation Museum on Friday from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The Petals and Pastels Market will then take over the Alberta Aviation Museum from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The I.A.M. Collective is hosting kiskisiwin – ᑭᐢᑭᓯᐃᐧᐣ, a weekend market happening Saturday and Sunday at the City Centre Mall. The event will feature local Indigenous artists and vendors as well as music and dancing.

Over at Kingsway Mall, the Spring Métis Market will have jewelry, artwork, clothing and more from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The Butterdome Spring Craft Sale is also back starting Friday, featuring food, clothing, ceramics and more. The event runs until Sunday.

Showstoppers

Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy may be Little Women, but their big personalities will be on display at the Citadel Theatre this month, with shows starting Saturday and running until May 25.

The artwork of Daniela Bahry and Karen McCullum will be on display at Bay 1 Gallery starting Friday until May 17. The gallery is hosting an artists-in-attendance event on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Ballet Edmonton is set to bring audiences to the edge with Precipice with shows at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Triffo Theatre.

If you’re in the mood for a contemporary comedy, Where You Are at the Varscona Theatre may be more to your taste. The show began Thursday and runs until May 28.

This is the last weekend for the 117th annual Edmonton Music and Speech Arts Festival with performances being held at various locations in the city until Sunday.

Over at the Stanley A. Milner Library, there will be a concert to celebrate the release of Edmonton Public Library’s first children’s album, Sing It, Edmonton! Songs from the Neighbourhood on Sunday from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m.

Fun in the sun and more

The City of Edmonton’s Play Rangers program is back in Whitemud Park this Saturday with slacklining, popcorn and outdoor games from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The Strathcona County Museum has free programming on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In May, the activities will focus on an iconic women volunteer fire fighting troupe in Sherwood Park.

Chapters and Indigo stores in Edmonton are hosting Lego orchid make-and-take events ahead of Mother’s Day on Saturday.

The Spruce Grove Public Library is hosting a comic expo on Saturday with various pop culture-themed events throughout the day.

Three Edmonton Rona stores are getting ready for Mother’s Day with a kids DIY workshop on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. where participants will make a planter pot to take home.

The first Saturday of May is always Free Comic Book Day and Edmonton has a number of shops participating, including:

• Rolling Tales Pop culture;
• Sanctum Comics;
• Variant Edition Graphic Novels and Comics; and
• West Edmonton Coin & Stamp.
