Scenes from Edmonton’s first Pride Parade since 2018

The Pride parade returned to downtown Edmonton on Saturday for the first time since 2018. It was part of the Pride festival that ran all weekend.

Edmonton’s downtown core saw vibrant and busy crowds on Saturday as the first Pride Parade in many years marched along the streets.

“It’s been too long since we had a parade,” said attendee Glenn Wilkie, adding that it was a great way to celebrate a “diverse and loving group.”

The parade ran from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and is part of the larger Pride Festival, which runs the entire weekend.

Like many events of its kind, Edmonton’s Pride Parade has a complex history, first in working to overcome political and social challenges, and then in the controversy of its execution among the LGBTQ2S+ community.

Some had said Edmonton’s Pride Parade had become problematic for its sponsorships, police presence and inclusion of conservative politicians.

The parade committee previously told CTV News Edmonton it was “apprehensive” and wasn’t sure what to expect from the parade’s revival this weekend.

Regardless, Edmontonians came out in droves to represent their community. A media release from the city on Thursday said it anticipated a large turnout and multiple road closures – an accurate prediction.

“I’ve missed it,” said Geoff Anderson, who was watching the parade. “It means showing Edmonton that we’re here, reminding Edmonton that there’s a big queer community.”

Sunday will see a continuation of the festivities, with a brunch sing-along featuring drag queens Alaska 5000 and Willam. Friday night was an 18+ concert and afterparty.
