Residents close to wildfire in Sturgeon County ordered to evacuate

A mandatory evacuation order in Sturgeon County was issued for homes near the wildfire burning in the Redwater recreation area.

Residents living near a wildfire burning in and near a forested recreational area 50 kilometres northeast of Edmonton have been ordered to evacuate.

The Alberta government said in an emergency alert Tuesday afternoon people living in an area near the Redwater Provincial Recreation Area in Sturgeon County must evacuate immediately. The area affected is located between Range Road 213 east to Range Road 203 and between Township Road 580 south to Township Road 573.

A reception centre for evacuees is open at Pembina Place, 4944 53 St., in Redwater. People are asked to take important documents and medication with them, and to prepare to be away for three days.

The fire started on Saturday between range roads 203 and 212. The county said on Monday an all-terrain vehicle sparked the blaze.

Evacuations ordered south of Boyle

A wildfire burning south of Boyle in an area along Highway 831 between the Boyle fish pond and the Elscott turnoff has triggered an evacuation order.

The order is in effect for residents east of Range Road 194 and south of Township 644 in Athabasca County. People east of Range Road 195 and south of Township 650 should be prepared to evacuate if notified.

The Village of Boyle, which is under an evacuation alert due to the wildfire, is 124 kilometres northeast of Edmonton

The province also issued evacuation alerts Tuesday for nearby Thorhild County, and northwest of Edmonton in Westlock County and west of the city in Parkland County.

• 3:09 p.m. in Thorhild County: a wildfire is burning between range roads 203 and 211 and township roads 580 and 584;
• 7:45 in Westlock County: two out-of-control wildfires are burning near the hamlet of Fawcett and the summer village of Larkspur;
• 7:51 p.m. in Parkland County: a wildfire is burning north of Duffield betwen Township Road 530 north to Highway 16 and between Range Road 32 west to Range Road 34;

Residents in these areas should be prepared to evacuate, the province says.
