Recycling plant fire officially put out, crews still on scene: Strathcona County

Strathcona County says a fire at Genalta Recycling was out by Monday morning but crews will stay on site for fire suppression for the next few days.

A blaze that began Saturday morning is officially not burning anymore, but crews will stay on scene just in case, said Strathcona County Monday morning.

Strathcona and Edmonton crews responded to an industrial fire in the west end of Sherwood Park around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, the county told CTV News Edmonton.

It was later confirmed the fire was at GenAlta Recycling, a scrap metal processing plant equipped with a heavy-duty shredder for cars, farm machinery and more.

As of 10:40 a.m. Monday, the fire is completely put out and there are no hot spots on site, according to an updated X post from the county.

The post confirmed streets previously closed for emergency response have been reopened.

“Crews will remain on scene for a minimal fire suppression presence. This will be ongoing, but the fire itself is over,” the county told CTV News Edmonton.

Although the fire was contained on Saturday, thick smoke continued to billow throughout much of southeast Edmonton.

Alberta Environment was notified about the incident and monitored the situation, the county said.

While there is a Strathcona County alert system to notify the community of any risks, the county said updates were only made through social media channels because no immediate action was required.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

County officials added that no injuries have been reported.
