The City of Edmonton says its mail services were breached after a break-in and theft at a city facility late last month. Some 200 pieces of mail are estimated to have been stolen after-hours on the weekend of June 28. The city said the mail would have been dropped off at a city facility or sent locally between June 24 and 27. The stolen mail may have included personal details such as names, addresses, contact information, family details and financial information, said a statement from the city issued Thursday. Anyone who dropped off mail at a city facility – including recreation centres, attractions and the Edmonton Service Centre – or sent mail to the city through Canada Post between June 24 and 27, is encouraged to contact the city to confirm receipt of their mail. The city is also reaching out to individuals who may have been impacted. Mail storage has since been relocated to another location. Edmonton police are investigating the matter while the city conducts its own internal investigation to determine the extent of the privacy breach. The breach has also been reported to the Ministry of Technology and Innovation and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner.
