‘Please don’t hit me’: Messages on LRT trains meant to remind drivers of driving rules

The Alberta Motor Association has a new campaign aimed at educating drivers about safety around the LRT after recent collisions.

The number of crashes involving Edmonton’s LRT trains, as well as the city’s growing traffic fatality rate, signals a problem with how drivers respond to signs and signals, says the Alberta Motor Association.

The association on Thursday asked Edmontonians to make stopping for LRT trains one of their new year’s resolutions.

It launched a campaign in November educating drivers about the dangers of blocking intersections, ignoring traffic signs and the importance of staying alert while driving.

Since Edmonton’s newest LRT began running two years ago, the Valley Line has been involved in 24 collisions, 18 of which involved other automotive vehicles. In all of 2024, only three crashes involved Edmonton’s other LRT lines.

“Our ‘Signs and Signals’ campaign is focused on closing that gap, and helping drivers to better understand what they’re seeing—especially in areas like the Valley Line where collisions are too common,” AMA spokesperson Hannah Hamilton said in a news release.

The campaign includes wrapping some LRT cars with messages like “Give this train a brake,” “No right turns on red,” and “Please don’t hit me!”

The messaging will also be seen on billboards and social media.

Traffic fatalities in Alberta’s capital have doubled since 2020, with 32 recorded in 2025.

According to the AMA, 12 per cent of fatal collisions in Alberta are related to stop sign violations, while driver error at intersections contributes to almost half of pedestrian collisions.
